For homeowners, real estate developers, and lot owners in Anderson, Piedmont, and Central, South Carolina, building a home is more than construction—it’s creating a foundation for a future. And nothing is more foundational, quite literally, than a concrete house slab. At Hart Concrete Construction, we firmly believe in the principle, “Measure Twice, Pour Once,” because we understand that every slab we pour supports not just structures but dreams.
Recently, we had the privilege of working on a home in Central, SC, where we completed a concrete house slab over a five-day process. Here’s an inside look at how we approached and executed this crucial project, step by step.
Day 1: Site Preparation
Every great project starts with preparation, and this one was no different. The home’s designated lot posed a unique challenge—a steep slope that required significant excavation. Our team started by removing a tree and cutting a clean line down the hill.
The goal? To create a flat, stable grade for both the house slab and the adjacent yard. By the end of the day, we had transformed a sloping bank into a foundation-worthy flat surface, ready for the forms to take shape.
Why this matters: Proper site prep ensures the house will rest on stable, level ground, which is critical for drainage and long-term durability.
Day 2: Forming and Footings
Precision was key on the second day as we focused on forming the slab, which measured 62’2” x 27’. These forms created the outline of the house, providing structure and guidance for the next steps.
Next, we tackled the footings. These were dug 2 feet wide and 18 inches deep—a specification designed to ensure the home would have the necessary support to withstand weight and time. We then added 3 continuous #4 rebar all around the perimeter and through the interior footings, reinforcing the foundation to provide long-term stability.
Why this matters: Footings and rebar ensure the slab and home can resist cracking, shifting, and other forces of nature.
Day 3: Gravel Backfill and Vapor Barrier
On the third day, our focus shifted to the layer beneath the slab. With plumbing ditches already laid, we backfilled them and reset the dirt’s grade to the correct elevation. Then, we applied a 2-inch layer of gravel across the entire slab area.
Before wrapping up the day, we laid down a poly plastic sheet to create a vapor barrier. This vital step prevents moisture from the ground below from seeping into the concrete, helping maintain the slab’s integrity and the home’s overall comfort.
Why this matters: A vapor barrier is essential for preventing mold, moisture issues, and structural damage over time.
Day 4: Pouring the Concrete
Day four marked the most exciting day—the pour! Using a 3000 PSI concrete mix, we poured a 4-inch thick slick-finish slab. The footings, in contrast, were poured to a depth of 18 inches for maximum structural support.
After the primary slab was complete, we removed the forms, built new outlines for the front porch (measuring 6’ x 14’), and poured that section too. To finish, the team applied saw joints across the slab to allow for controlled cracking, ensuring a professional and durable result.
Why this matters: Pouring the concrete with proper thickness and using saw joints enhances both the slab’s strength and durability.
Day 5: Final Grading and Polish
The last day focused on the finishing touches. Our team graded the area around the slab, backfilling with topsoil and creating a dirt slope pitched away from the house to aid water drainage.
This step may seem small in comparison to the previous days, but it’s just as impactful. Proper grading around a house is essential for preventing water pooling, which can cause costly damage over time.
Why this matters: Excellent drainage and clean grading ensure the longevity of the home and prevent potential water issues.
