Concrete Contractor Solutions for a Simpsonville Garage

Concrete Contractor Solutions can come easy with Hart Concrete Construction. Cracked, uneven, and broken driveways not only detract from your home’s curb appeal, but they can also pose significant safety hazards. Fortunately, with expert guidance and the right approach, these concrete problems can be effectively solved. Our case study comes from a recent Concrete Garage restoration project in Simpsonville. It highlights our approach, as we tackled another contractors failures. This homeowner learned not all concrete contractors are equal in Simpsonville.

The Importance of a Solid Foundation

Every successful project begins with a solid foundation. This is especially true when it comes to concrete work. Our recent project started with significant issues due to a previous contractor’s lack of knowledge. They attempted to build a block wall, which unfortunately collapsed. This failure underscored the importance of working with experienced professionals who understand the intricacies of concrete work. It is far more that sand and rocks. Choosing a Hart Concrete Construction will always prove to be a solid choice. (See what we did there 💪🏼)

Once the failed wall was cleared, the next step was to address the ground itself. We brought in five tantrum dump trucks of dirt to establish a solid base. This process involved spreading, compacting, and grading the dirt to prepare it for the 37×27 garage slab. A properly graded surface is crucial to prevent future issues like cracking or settling. It’s a detail that might seem minor, but it forms the backbone of a durable, long-lasting concrete surface.

Navigating Setbacks with Strategic Solutions

After preparing the ground, we encountered a new challenge with the pre-existing driveway. There was an 8-inch height difference that had to be addressed to maintain a level surface for the new concrete slab. Rather than patching over the problem, we decided on a more robust solution—removing a 10×37-foot section of the driveway. This decision allowed us to establish a seamless transition between the old and new concrete, ensuring both safety and aesthetics were prioritized.

This setback might have seemed daunting, but with a our approach, we turned it into an opportunity to improve the overall project outcome. By investing half a day to remove and haul away the old concrete, we ensured the longevity and performance of the driveway. This step is crucial for homeowners to consider, as cutting corners with concrete repair can lead to more costly fixes down the road.

Forming the Perfect Foundation

With the old concrete section removed, we began the process of forming the new garage slab. The importance of proper water drainage cannot be overstated, especially in residential projects. To prevent water from pooling at the back of the garage, we designed the slab with a 2-inch fall from the back to the front. Additionally, creating grade pens allowed us to form a valley, directing water away from the structure and protecting the garage from potential water damage.

In laying this foundation, we used 57 stone to establish a sub-grade with 100% compaction. This gives the slab the stability needed to withstand environmental stresses and everyday use. Spending half a day on this step ensured the quality and durability of the finished product. Homeowners should prioritize these same considerations when planning any concrete work, as they significantly impact the structure’s life span.

The Concrete Pour Day

At Hart Concrete Construction the pour day is where planning meets execution. We make it look easy, because of the time spent planning. It requires precision to ensure a smooth, crack-free finish. For this project, we poured 27 yards of concrete, meticulously motor bugged to minimize potential cracking from heavy cement trucks. The pour included a slick finish floor inside the 37×27 garage and a broom finish for the exterior 10×37 section, providing both aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Strategically placed saw joints, spaced 10 feet apart in both directions, were cut into the slab. These joints are essential in controlling the natural cracking that occurs as concrete cures. It’s a detail that not only extends the life of the driveway but also enhances its appearance. For homeowners, understanding these technical aspects can inform better decision-making when working with concrete contractors.
